Now students in Maharashtra can register as voters while enrolling in colleges or universities. The move is part of the Election Commission of India’s month-long drive, which aims to maximise the number of eligible voters and remove the names of deceased voters from the electoral rolls.

According to Anil Walvi, deputy chief electoral officer, Maharashtra, students will be given the voter registration form with the admission application forms. “Around 12 lakh voters in the age group of 18 to 19 years have been registered in the state. The special drive is to increase the number of young voters,” said Walvi. He added that the move will save the students time as they earlier had to make a separate trip to a government office to become a registered voter.

He added that students, who have not turned 18 at the time of enrolling in colleges, will be given a form with their admission forms to pledge as future voters. “The registration process will also be carried out in every housing society,” Walvi said. Higher and technical education department has already issued a circular asking all universities, colleges and institutes to register students at the time of admission for the Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha, and local body elections.

Citizens will also be able to submit their forms at the office of electoral registration officer or send it by post. The forms can be submitted at e-seva centres. The Election Commission is also planning to organise special camps for public and private educational institutions.
