After a 30-year-old software engineer was allegedly strangled to death by her live-in partner at Badlapur in Thane on Wednesday, the police plans to record their families’ statements. The incident occurred after they had a fight over the issue of their marriage, police said on Thursday. The cops have also seized their clothes and sent them to the forensic lab.

The engineer has been identified as Punam Punyakar Gajbhiye and belongs to Nashik. She was living in Badlapur since the past three years and worked with an IT firm at Kanjurmarg in Mumbai, police said. Punam’s partner Vijay Sanjay Jharkad,22, was a mobile repairer and was residing with her from the past six months at Badlapur.

Vijay strangled Punam with her scarf late on Wednesday after she told him that she will not be able to continue the relationship with him as her family members were against it. After the incident, Jharkad locked the door and fled from the spot to his friend’s place. The 22-year-old met his friend in a nearby area and told him about the murder.

His friend soon alerted the police and Vijay arrested. Vijay is in police custody till March 11.

After the post mortem, Punam’s body was handed over to her family and they have taken it to Nashik for final rights.

Vijay’s parents have told the police that their son was in a relationship with Punam and that he used to often tell them about her at home. His parents added that the couple was planning on getting married this year.

M Polekar, investigation police officer said, “We are in the process of recording statements of both the couple parents. The building in which they recently shifted to has been newly constructed and that apart from their room all other flats were locked (not sold). We are waiting for the forensic report. The watchman said he did not know much about the couple as they entered at irregular times and he just saw them enter the building.”
