A thief was lynched to death by a mob in Vasai for stealing Rs5,000 on Friday. Eight people were detained for questioning by the Waliv police. No arrests have been made so far.

The body of Sandip Rakesh Mishra, 22, a resident of Dhanivbau Dubey chawl in Vasai, was found near the chawl on Saturday morning by the Waliv police.

The police found that Mishra and three of his friends had come to the area intending to steal. A 40-member mob caught Mishra in the act and beat him up while his friends fled.

Mishra’s friends called his mobile phone and pleaded with the mob to spare his life. They said they would to repay the stolen money but the mob was unwilling to listen. He died on the spot owing to internal injuries.

“We are checking Mishra’s call data records to ascertain which of his friends called him” said an official.
