Three persons died in a crash involving three vehicles at Chembur on the eastern freeway on Tuesday morning, throwing peak-hour traffic out of gear.

According to the police, an Innova vehicle was heading towards Panjarpol junction (north-bound) when it jumped the divider, went to the opposite lane and crashed into a taxi which was heading towards South bound. “Two occupants seated in the taxi died in the accident while the Innova driver also succumbed to his injuries,” said a police officer from RCF police station who was at the spot.

Police stated that owing to the impact of the Innova, the taxi driver lost control over his vehicle and crashed into another car and later a divider.

The fire brigade was pressed into service for clearing the badly mangled vehicles. As a result of the accident, traffic on the eastern freeway that has witnessed many crashes in the past was severely affected. Office-goers had to face the brunt of slowmoving traffic. Traffic police have been warning about the speed limits on the freeway but there has been little control.

Incessant rains lashed the city since early Tuesday, resulting in slippery roads.
