Throw your garbage into the dustbin, win a gift voucher — that’s how the Thane Municipal Corporation plans to encourage residents to keep their city clean.

The civic body will install 100 new ‘techbins’ at public places to prevent littering. “People do not bother to walk to the nearest bin in parks, theatres, gardens or bus stops. Most of them end up throwing their garbage on the road. That is why we plan to install these bins in public places,” said Manisha Pradhan, pollution control officer, TMC

The seven-foot-high bin will be synced to a mobile application. Residents who use the app to locate the nearest techbin will win cash prizes.

“Residents will get a QR code on the app. Scanning this entitles them to a cash reward. Residents who dispose of their garbage in the bin will get coupons that can be redeemed at popular food and shopping outlets. However, they can only get one coupon a day,” she added.

She said the bins are powered by LED lights and have separate compartments for dry and wet waste. “We want residents to develop the habit of disposing of their waste in a dustbin.  This will help us save the money we spend on measures to pick up litter from the streets. These bins will the be emptied into bigger bins in the city,” she said.
