The Vikhroli police arrested two eunuchs on Thursday for allegedly robbing commuters on a desolate part of the Eastern Express Highway (EEH).

Although the two have confessed to just one theft, the police suspect that they have been involved in similar robberies and thefts in other parts of the city as well.

On Wednesday, a tea stall vendor had approached the Vikhroli police and complained that he and other vendors of the area were being harassed by the two eunuchs. The police, dressed in casuals, began keeping a eye on the eunuchs loitering around the EEH. “We had been getting reports that the eunuchs have been harassing many vendors along the EEH and also robbing passersby,” said Vijay Sandbhor, assistant police inspector of Vikhroli police station.

The police nabbed the two, identified as Varsha Gopalsingh Rathod, who is a resident of Kings Circle, and Mahi Suraj Jadhav, who stays in Navi Mumbai.

The eunuchs told the police that the robbery was their first. The police, however, are now probing cases of robberies where the eunuchs might have targeted motorists at other places.

“We have informed all police stations in the city about their arrest to ascertain if the accused were involved in any other robberies earlier,” said Sanjay More, senior police inspector, Vikhroli police station.

The police have arrested the two under sections of theft under the Indian Penal Code.
