In separate incidents, two police constables in the city faced the wrath of bikers when they tried to stop them from riding without helmets.

While one of them was manhandled at Kurar, the other was injured when a motorcycle rammed on to him at Antop hill.

According to Antop hill police, Ashok Shinde, 55, was on duty near Puja nursing home at Kalpak naka when three men on an Activa passed by around 5.30pm.

The trio knocked Shinde down at the junction when the latter tried to stop them. The impact was such that Shinde sustained an injury close to his eye for which doctors had to administer stiches. He also suffered injuries on his legs.

The police arrested one Yasim Khawaja Shaikh, 22, in this connection who was riding the Activa. Investigations revealed that Shaikh was under the influence of alcohol when the incident occurred.

“Shaikh has been arrested for rash driving. The trio were local residents,” said Vasant Patil, senior police inspector, Antop hill police station.

In another incident at Malad, constable Santosh Poghar, 37, was manhandled on the road in front of Laxmannagar police outpost at Kurar village around 1am. Poghar had stopped two men on a bike for not wearing helmets. The accused grabbed Poghar’s collar and allegedly manhandled him.

The duo has been arrested for deterring a public servant from discharging his duties. A general alert has been sounded in the city on the eve of Independence Day, for which police personnel have beefed up vigil on the roads and have undertaken checks.
