The Nalasopara police have arrested a man in connection with a case of honour killing that took place in April.

The police acted on a tip-off and arrested one Rajesh Singh from Chinchoti, Vasai, and arrested him for murder. The man confessed to the crime upon being questioned.

The murder, police said, had taken place sometime on April 26. They had found the body of a man in a gunny bag from a nullah in Nalasopara. The victim’s face had been disfigured. Upon investigation, it was found that the man, Mahendra Singh, 40, was the father of a boy who had fallen in love with a girl belonging to a different caste, in Nalasopara. Despite both being minors, the boy’s family was not opposed to the match but the girl’s relatives were irked with the alliance. To save them from the wrath of the girl’s family, the boy’s family hid the couple in Bihar in January. The girl’s family, who were looking for the couple, arrived in Vakola and questioned Mahendra on the whereabouts of the girl. When he feigned innocence, Rajesh Singh, the girl’s brother took Mahendra to a desolate place in Waliv and murdered him, said an officer. They disfigured his face with a boulder and disposed of his body in a nullah.

The police found the body, traced the victim’s address and registerwed a case of murder against unknown persons.

Investigations were on and the police suspected the girl’s brother. On Friday, acting on the tip-off, they picked up the accused from Vasai.

“Rajesh confessed to the crime when produced in Vasai court and is in police custody,” said an officer. “We are still looking for the girl’s father and other relatives, who are accomplices to the crime.”
