Why is there not a single picture of your weddings with Leander Paes, his lawyer asked the tennis player’s estranged live-in partner Rhea Pillai, while cross-examining her complaint alleging domestic violence.
The cross-examination of Pillai began on Tuesday where she claimed that she was married to Paes twice, once in 2005 and again in 2008. She claimed that they had a ‘Gandharva marriage’.
Gandharva marriage is one of the eight kinds of Hindu marriage. According to the scripts, it involves no rituals, witnesses or family members.
On Saturday, Paes’s lawyer Abad Ponda questioned her on why they married again in 2008 to which she said, “They married in 2008 again because her divorce decree of her previous marriage with Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt came through in 2008. Hence, we revised our vows again.” Pillai said that it was their mutual decision to get married again.
Ponda later asked Pillai if there were any photographs of the said marriage. Pillai denied to have any photographs and in an irritated tone replied, “why are you so focusing on the photos? The fact that his passport mentions me as wife clears the air.”
Questioning further on photograph Ponda asked her, “Did you not feel to click a photograph of the wedding since you were getting married to the father of your child?”
Replying to the question, Pillai said, both the times she could not take pictures. In 2005, when they married first, she was pregnant and was not keeping well. “My only concern at that time over and above my health was to solemnise the marriage. Therefore, we both decided to go for a Gandharva marriage. My focus was not at all on getting photographs,” Pillai deposed.
Pillai further said that in 2008 also the situation was very difficult as lot of things happened at one go. “Our daughter was diagnosed with sleep apnea and it was difficult. Our daughter would not sleep and I had to stay awake. That’s when I took help of my friends who would look after our child so that I could get some sleep. Further, because of legal circumstances of my ex-husband, Sanjay Dutt, and later demise of my ex father-in-law Sunil Dutt, the divorce procedure was also delayed,” Pillai said. According to her, she could not think of taking a picture of their wedding on both the occasions because of the stress.
With this, the cross-examination was halted and would continue with the next hearing scheduled after a week.
