Almost seven months after a two-day-old baby was abandoned at Vasai railway station, his 20-year-old mother was arrested by the Vasai Government Railway Police (GRP).
The woman’s brother-in-law was also arrested along with her from Uttar Pradesh.
The baby has been kept at a child care centre at Nerul.
Police inspector Mahesh Bagwe of Vasai GRP said that on March 31, Zarina Khan, a 45-year-old a sweeper, found the baby abandoned on a chair at platform 1 in Vasai railway station. “We scanned the CCTV footage and arrested the child’s mother, Rasheeda Khatoon, a resident of Nalasopara, and her brother-in-law, Khaleel Shah, 30,” said Bagwe.
Khatoon is unmarried and feared social stigma. “After delivering the baby at Vasai government hospital, she planned to abandon the baby and Shah help her, said Bagwe.
The police first scanned the hospital records and found that Khatoon had delivered a baby a few days ago. When they went to her place for inquiry, they found the house locked. “The neighbours said that after delivery, Khatoon had gone to Basti in Uttar Pradesh. They said that her mobile phone had been switched off right after she left,” said Bagwe.
After she switched on her phone, the police traced her location in Basti. They police arrested her and Shah under section 317 (abandonment of child) of the Indian Penal Code. “They are in police custody and were produced in the Vasai court on Monday,” said Bagwe.
