Woman jumps to death in Kurla

Depressed over her ill health, a 55-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping off the terrace of her building in Kurla on Monday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Gurumukh Akhawani, a resident of Laher-ganga apartments at LBS Road in Kurla (west). The Kurla police stated that she was grappling with ailments and was under treatment from the past two years. “She was depressed due to her ill health and hence decided to end her life,” said a police officer from Kurla police station who is privy to the investigation.

Akhawani lived on the ground floor of the building. She went to terrace and jumped off around 4.15pm. The family owns at bag shop at Kurla station. Police stated that Akhawani may have been contemplating to end her life for some time. “Around 1pm, she went to meet her younger son who lives couple of buildings away when he had come to his house from the shop. While talking with her son, she had also asked him about a suicide of a relative who had also jumped off a building. The son told her to ignore the matter,” said the officer.

She then returned home. “Her husband and two sons were in the shop while her daughter-in-law who is pregnant has been in Jaipur from the past one month. She was alone at home when the incident occurred,” said the officer.

The local residents found her lying motionless on the floor following which she was taken to Sion Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.
