A 28-year-old labourer was held for setting his lover on fire at Kalwa in Thane on Wednesday. The woman suffered 90% burns and is critical, said police.
The woman, a homemaker, has four children with her husband, who she left six months ago. She had been staying with the accused Ramashray alias Raju Pal, 28, since then. “The woman and her husband parted ways after they found out about each other’s extramarital affairs,” said a police officer.
On Wednesday, the woman asked Pal why he had not been going to work for the past few days. “Pal’s refusal to work angered the woman, who was unable to run the house without his wages. The two began arguing. Pal took out a can of kerosene from the kitchen and threatened to kill the woman. When she continued to argue with him, he poured kerosene on her. Before she could run out of the house, he set her on fire,” said S Kesare, investigating officer, Kalwa police station.
Pal fled, while the woman came out of the house, screaming for help. Her neighbour covered her with a blanket and took her to the Thane Civil Hospital. Police were informed and Pal was arrested from Kalwa. Police suspected that he was planning to fly to Uttar Pradesh to evade detection.
Pal was arrested under section 307 (attempt to murder), 323(punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code.
