“I was clueless when my phone stopped working but later got to know that the company had shut down services,” said Tyagaraj Gowda, 61.
Many users were angry that the company had suddenly called off operations without giving them the time to switch to other operators. Bhavesh Ghosar, a Uninor user posted a comment on Facebook: “Lot of people will be contacting me, now where will they contact me. I don’t know how someone can let this happen? This is completely wrong.”
Uninor users were further confused by rumours about non-portability of numbers. However, Sarfaraz Quershi who recently got his number ported posted about it on Uninor’s official Facebook page and put an end to the rumours.
Airtel offered special welcome offers across Mumbai to attract the 1.8 million subscribers who were left without a service.
“We are keenly looking forward to the opportunity and are putting together a host of compelling initiatives and propositions to seamlessly on-board Uninor's customers on our network,” said a Reliance Communications spokesperson.
Vodafone offered to make the transition smoother for Uninor users. “As per regulatory guidelines, customers who are interested in joining another operator, are required to raise a request to their existing network service provider to port out with their existing mobile number and follow a simple MNP process,” said a spokesperson.
