Two days after one person died in an accident at Nerul, another accident on the Sion-Panvel highway killed one and injured four. The deceased has been identified as Paul Mathew, 35, a resident of Punjab Colony in Sion-Koliwada.
The accident involving a Maruti Esteem, a Tata Indigo Cool Cab, a Mahindra Xylo and a trailer occurred at around 4.30pm at the Vashi-end of the CBD Belapur flyover. “The tyre of the Esteem car that Mathew was driving got punctured, and hence he pulled over. He and his co-passenger Devendra Bisht then waved down an Indigo Cool Cab to inquire if there was any tyre repair shop in the area,” said Vijay Patil, deputy commissioner of police (traffic).
The driver of the taxi stopped to help the duo. However, the driver of the Xylo that was a few metres behind could not brake in time and crashed into the two vehicles and the three men who were standing on the road.
“The impact was so severe that the cool cab ended up under a trailer on the road. Paul was killed on the spot,” Patil said. “It took some time to retrieve the vehicle, which affected traffic on the stretch. The injured were rushed to MGM hospital in CBD Belapur.”
Those injured were taxi driver Jaiprakash Pandey, 60; Vinod Rane, 19, and Akash Mhatre, 19, who were with Vilas Rane, 21, the driver of the Xylo. All four are undergoing treatment at the hospital. Bisht received minor injuries and was administered first aid.
Police said that the Xylo had not yet been registered. Vilas Rane has been arrested, police said.
