1 dead after AC explodes in MIDC

A 26-year-old man died and three of his colleagues seriously injured after the compressor of an air conditioner exploded at an office in MIDC, Andheri (East), on Saturday.

According to the MIDC police, the victims are employees of the air conditioner repairing firm Primea Airconditioners, Vile Parle. The four were sent to the office of Worley Parson Resources and Energy to repair an air conditioner when the explosion happened. The incident took place around 12.30 pm on the third floor of High Tech Plaza.

The man who died has been identified as Rashid Sayyad. Abdul Hamid Shaikh, 30, Javed Khan, 35, and Mohammad Sulemaniya, 22, sustained serious injuries.

Inspector B Gurav said, “The victims were rushed to Holy Spirit hospital where Sayyad was declared dead. Shaikh, Khan and Sulemaniya sustained serious injuries and are currently recuperating at the hospital. They are still not out of danger.” An officer from MIDC police station added that it appeared to be error of judgment on the part of the four men that led to the explosion.

Investigations are on in the case and if it emerges that the accident was a result of negligence, a case will be registered, police said. Currently, an accidental death report has been registered. A Marol fire brigade official said it was too early to say if the blast was triggered due to someone’s negligence.
