Ten teams have been formed to trace the autorickshaw driver, who allegedly raped a five-year-old resident of Andheri (East) at an isolated spot in Aarey Colony on Sunday night.
The incident took place when the child went out to buy milk from a shop in the vicinity. The accused drove her to Aarey Colony, allegedly raped her and left the child at the spot. The child, who was in tears, was spotted by a constable from the Mumbai crime branch. With the child riding pillion, the constable chased the auto driver on his bike for some time, but stopped as he realised the bleeding child was in need of immediate medical attention. As the vehicle was at a distance and it was dark, the constable could not see the registration number.
The police have obtained the CCTV footage from at least 10 spots on the road between Sahar and Aarey Colony. Sources said the autorickshaw driver went to the Andheri-Kurla road before taking a left to Andheri and then turned towards the MIDC area. From there he went to the Vijay Nagar bridge, and took a road leading to the Aarey Colony via Marol Camp.
The constable took the girl to the Aarey police station, made a diary entry and moved her to a government hospital in the police vehicle. As her condition was deteriorating, she was later shifted to a prominent government hospital in South Mumbai.
The shopkeeper told police he had seen the autorickshaw driver.
The teams from Ghatkopar to Bandra are in the process of identifying the accused, who according to the child and the CCTV footage, was driving was an autorickshaw with a yellow hood.
The teams are also visiting autorickshaw stands in these areas, and are questioning various people to identify the accused.
