A truck driver ran over a 10-year-old boy riding a bicycle in the Pydhonie area on Thursday evening. The accused, Vijay Bahadur Yadav, 26, was driving back after depositing a consignment in the Danabundar area of Pydhonie when the incident took place. Yadav was arrested on the charge of rash and negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
According to Pydhonie police, the incident took place around 4.30pm in the Danabundar area when Yadav was returning after depositing a consignment. “The road on which Yadav was driving was narrow as there are slums both sides. The deceased, Prashant Bedi, was riding his bicycle and was just ahead of the truck,” said sub-inspector Ashok Ugale, Pydhonie police.
“The truck hit the bicycle, because of which Bedi, who resides in a slum in Danabundar, lost balance and came under the truck’s rear wheel of the truck. Before Yadav could halt the truck he had run over Bedi,” added Ugale. Locals rushed Bedi to St George hospital where he was later declared dead.
Some of the locals present at the spot beat him Yadav. A police patrol vehicle, passing by, took him to the police station.
Ugale added that medical tests proved that Yadav was not under the influence of alcohol. The Pydhonie police later arrested him.
