With the extended deadline to file income tax (I-T) returns ending on Monday, the department found that around 11.6 lakh people had filed returns online on July 31, which resulted in overload on the website.

This is the highest number of online returns filed in a day, the last being 7.5 lakh on March 31.

Officials estimated that over 50 lakh people attempted to file their returns on July 31, but the website crashed.

Following this, the deadline was extended till Monday (August 5).

With filing of online returns for those earning more than Rs5 lakh per annum becoming mandatory from this year, the number of registered online users went up by 20 lakh in just five days.

Till last year the limit was for those earning Rs10 lakh and above.

“A large number of people got themselves registered at the last moment, which is evident by the figures of the past five days,” a senior I-T official said.

However, the department did not witness a lot of taxpayers paying their returns on the new deadline.

“This is because online returns can be filed till midnight,” the official said, adding that the figure for Monday would be available in the next few days.

According to officials, many taxpayers may availed of the extended deadline as out of the 3.06 crore registered users on July 31, only 1.03 crore had filed their returns.

Of the total registered users, 60% to 70% were supposed to file returns by Monday, while the rest, including corporate, have September 30 as deadline to file returns.
