The civic body demolished 110 structures at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Nagar in Andheri West on Thursday as they were built in contravention to civic rules. These structures are part of the Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (Mhada) colony.
The high court had ordered the demolition of all 4,362 structures that are part of this colony in 2009 after DISHA, a non-government organisation, filed a public interest litigation in 2006, claiming that the structures were illegal. These include residential as well as commercial structures.
"Although the ground floors of all the structures are legal, the first floors of all the 4,362 structures have been constructed illegally. If we get adequate police protection for the next 15 days, we will be able to demolish all of them," said Ramesh Pawar, ward officer, K-West ward.
After the Bombay high court ordered the demolition of these structures, occupants had moved the Supreme Court and got a stay order till April 30.
"The residents applied for a stay again but the apex court did not grant it to them. So we resumed our demolition drive against the illegal structures," said Pawar.
The demolition drive initiated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in January this year is expected to end in 15 days. A total of 1,810 illegal structures have been demolished so far.
