A 12-year-old girl allegedly attempted to commit suicide at her Borivli (east) residence on Friday evening.

While locals claimed that the girl, Mona Chugh (name changed), was upset after being reprimanded by her teacher, her father denied it.

According to the Kasturba Marg police, Chugh studies in Class 6 in a Borivli school. She lives in a chawl in Sukurwadi area with her parents and brother.

The police said Mona had returned home from school around 6pm, and went directly to her bedroom saying she wanted to change her clothes.

A few minutes later, her mother called her out for an evening snack. When Mona didn’t respond, the mother sent the girl’s brother to check on her. He found that the door was locked. He, however, saw his sister hanging from the ceiling fan and immediately alerted his mother, who then called the neighbours for help.

“They took the girl to the hospital; her condition is stable. She is in the ICCU,” said Bharat Worlikar, senior inspector, Kasturba Marg police station. “We will question her once she is in a condition to talk to us.”

Worlikar said while being taken to the hospital, Mona mumbled to one of her neighbours that she had felt someone choking her. “She is mostly making up the story.

But we are not discounting it and will question the girl once she is able to speak. We have recovered a dupatta from the spot and are probing the reason for her attempt,” said another officer, requesting anonymity.
