A 12-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging herself at her Kandivli residence on Saturday night after her father slapped her for talking to boys.

Munni Kodak, a resident of Vembu Shakti Mariamman welfare society on the Khajuria Tank road, Kandivli (West) was found hanging from the ceiling fan by her parents around 9.30pm.

The police have not found a suicide note but based on statements given by the family, they suspect she committed suicide probably after her father Shekhar Modak slapped her for talking and playing with boys on Saturday evening.

The police further said Shekhar had slapped Munni twice before over the same reason. However, this time in a fit of rage she locked herself inside the house and reportedly committed suicide.

After the victim locked her inside the house, Shekhar left the house.

When he returned, Shekhar did not get a response from his daughter’s room when he knocked on the door.

He then went to his relative’s residence in Malad along with his wife and returned on Sunday morning.

When he still did not receive a response, he broke open the door following which he found his daughter hanging from the ceiling fan and informed the police about the incident, said Suryakant Ghatge senior police inspector of the Kandivli police station.

Munni was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead. The police have registered a case of accidental death.
