A 13-year-old boy was crushed to death after he accidentally came under a JCB machine that was being used to clean the Mithi River in Kurla, on Saturday evening.
Abdul Aziz, 13, was a student of Class 7 of a local school and lived with his parents at Takdeerwala slum located in Kismat Nagar in Kurla. The Mithi River is located next to the slum area. The BMC gives cleaning contracts to private companies who then send their employees along with the JCB machine for the clean-up.
The incident took place around 6pm when the cleaning process was going on. Aziz was playing with his friends when he came under the giant JCB machine. He was crushed to death on the spot. The residents of Kismat Nagar surrounded the JCB and got hold of the driver, preventing him from fleeing. They then handed him over to the Kurla police.
“We have arrested the driver, Arman Khan, 22, on charges of causing death due to negligence. We will be producing him in court on Sunday,” said Laxman Bhalerao, senior police inspector of Kurla police station.
The mishap incensed the locals and additional policemen had to be called in to make sure that a law and order situation did not arise, police said.
Aziz’s body has been sent to Rajawadi Hospital where a post-mortem will be conducted.
