The Powai police, on Thursday, arrested a 38-year-old truck driver after he allegedly ran over a teenage cyclist in the Chandivli area. The police said the deceased, Chandan Gupta, 17, was riding on the wrong side of the road.
According to the Powai police, Gupta lived at Chandivli with his father, Radheshyam, a labourer, and his mother, a housewife. The incident occurred at around 4pm on Thursday when the Class 10 student was out in the vicinity on his bicycle to buy some groceries.
While Gupta was riding towards Chandivli farm road, the truck driver, Yatin Ahmad Shaikh, 38, a resident of Kandivli, was driving towards Sakinaka.
“The truck was moving at a high speed and Shaikh could not control the vehicle even though he spotted the boy. The truck had a head-on collision with the cycle. Gupta was thrown off the bicycle because of the impact, following which his head was crushed under the left rear wheel of the truck,” said Bhajirao Bhosle, senior police inspector, Powai police station.
Gupta was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital, having sustained grievous head injuries. Shaikh turned himself in and was booked for rash driving and causing death due to negligence.
