A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the terrace of a 12-storey building in Malad (W) on Saturday afternoon.

The police have not found any suicide note on her or at her residence.

The girl has been identified as Vidhi Mehta, 17, a resident of Trimurti Apartment, Jakarta Road. Vidhi was a student of FYJC at a Malad-based college, the police said. Vidhi’s father Ritesh is a businessman and her mother is a housewife.

According to the police, Vidhi, who lives with her parents in a flat on the 11th floor of the building, left her house around 2.30pm, after which she went to the terrace and jumped off.

On hearing a loud thud, the residents went out to investigate and found Vidhi lying on the ground with terrible injuries. Her parents were informed about the incident and they rushed her to a private hospital, where she declared dead on arrival. The police said she had sustained grievous injuries to her head. Some people said that the girl had gone to the terrace to fly kites. But, the police said it appeared that she had committed suicide.

Vasant Patil, police sub-inspector of Malad police station, said, “We did not find any kite or string (used for flying kites) from the terrace. We have also learnt that she had been suffering from severe headaches since a few days and had been upset about it. However, the reason for the suicide is yet to be ascertained.”

The body has been sent to Bhagwati Hospital for a post-mortem. The police have registered a case of accidental death.
