A man died and another was hurt while crossing the tracks at Diva railway crossing on their motorcycle. The incident took place on Friday night, when the duo was hit by a Thane-Badlapur local.

Thane Government Railway Police (GRP) officers have identified the deceased as Mangesh Patil, 18. He was riding pillion with Avinash Dhone, 20. While the GRP have registered a case of accidental death, they said the men crossed the tracks despite the gate being shut.

“They were first rushed to a hospital in Diva and then to Thane civil hospital. They were finally taken to JJ Hospital. Both Patil and Dhone suffered head injuries,” said a GRP officer.

Officials at Diva railway station said pedestrians and bikers continue to cross the tracks despite warnings. “People risk their lives and cross tracks even when the gate is shut. The bikers do it too – they slide the vehicle under the gate and then bend down to go to the other side. We have tried to stop people from doing this, but nothing seems to help,” an official at Diva railway station on condition of anonymity.
