Mumbaiites can also look forward to 180 new BEST (Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport) buses between September and December.
For the first time, the city will also get to travel in 50 new air-conditioned Volvo BEST buses. The details will be finalised within two months.
The BEST is getting these buses under central government's Jawaharlal Nehru National Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The 180 buses were supposed to come to the city earlier, but were delayed after the Centre asked for some technical changes to be made to them. "The issue has now been sorted out so the remaining buses will come from September-end," said O.P. Gupta, general manager, BEST.
The transport ministry had asked for ‘multiplex wiring' inside the buses so that there would be fewer breakdowns. As per the schedule, the buses under the JNNURM were supposed to have started operating on city roads from March 31, but the new requirement delayed the plan.
So far, the central government has given Rs 36 crore and the state Rs 15 crore to the BEST under JNNURM for the buses.
The BEST fleet has 4,600 buses in Mumbai, off which 3,900 are single-deckers.
Meanwhile, the BEST is considering finding new plots for depots and is scouting for land in Goregaon and Ghatkopar so that there will be space to park all the new buses that are coming in.
