Two police constables attached to the Thane commissionerate were killed after their police van skidded off the road and fell into a ditch on the Mumbai-Pune expressway, near Lonavala, on Sunday afternoon.
Two other constables who were in the vehicle were injured in the mishap and are said to be in a critical state.
According to officials from the Highway Safety Patrol, State Traffic Control Room, the van was headed from Kolhapur towards Thane when the accident took place. The deceased, identified as Tukaram More and Sharad Chavan, died on the spot while two others, a assistant sub inspector identified as Kode and constable Sachin Chavan were rushed to the hospital at Nigdi where they were said to be critical.
The police said the accident took place around 2pm when the four were on their way back from Kolhapur. “They had gone to drop an accused at Kolhapur jail and were on their way back when the accident took place. Prima facie it looks like they were speeding above the prescribed speed limit,” said Dileep Bhujbal, superintendent of police, highway police (Pune).
Bhujbal said the four men who were on duty at the time of the accident were allegedly speeding on a slope and when they took the turn at the end of the slope, their van skid and fell into ditch 75 feet deep. Following the accident, a passerby informed the highway police.
