Fourteen days after the murder of senior journalist J Dey, the killers and the motive continue to elude the police. On Friday, they repeated their vow of finding a ‘definite’ breakthrough in the case soon. “It’s just a matter of time before we have a breakthrough. Our investigation is on the right track,” additional commissioner of police, crime, Deven Bharati said.
Crime branch sources, meanwhile, told HT that the Mumbai police had got custody of two notorious robbers from Gujarat who they suspect have leads in the case. Though there was no official confirmation, sources identified the duo as Mustafa and Sikandar.
The duo, sources claimed, also specialised in smuggling red sanders and marine diesel at Kadla port. It may be recalled that the possible involvement of the red sanders and oil mafia in the murder continues to be explored by investigators.
Sources claimed that Mustafa was originally from Diva while Sikandar hails from Govandi. The duo was arrested by the Gujarat police in connection with a 2010 robbery and lodged in a Bhuj jail ever since.
Sources also revealed that apart from the duo, the police also managed to trace an intermediary of Umed, the sharpshooter whose name surfaced in the probe into the murderous attack on Iqbal Kaskar, younger brother of Dawood Ibrahim, last month. He is absconding.
Umed’s role is also being probed in Dey’s killing.
