Two small-time businessmen from Vasai were arrested on Friday by the Kashimira police for allegedly kidnapping a printing press owner and demanding a ransom of Rs 1 lakh.
The police said Mira Road resident Ibrahim Khan (30) was kidnapped from his office on May 7 and taken to Vasai.
Khan was released after four days when he paid Rs 50,000. He then filed a police complaint and Rajesh Sridharan (25) and Sunny Patil (30) were arrested.
The police are now on the lookout for businessmen Salman Misal, who allegedly planned the kidnapping.
Sridharan and Patil own a unit of powder coating of metal appliances in Vasai.
Khan had met them for some work a few months ago.
Police Sub Inspector Ajay Sinkar from Kashimira police station said on May 7, the three men allegedly threatened Khan, pushed him inside a car and took him to their unit at Vasai.
They demanded Rs 1 lakh for his release. When Khan refused, they assaulted him and confined him.
“Only when Khan agreed to give them Rs 50,000 did they let him go. Khan’s family had by then registered a missing complaint and we were searching for Khan,” said Sinkar.
When Khan paid them, he was dropped at his residence on May 11.
“We then laid a trap for the duo at Vasai and arrested them from their unit at Papdi area in Vasai,” Sikan said.
The two have been arrested on the charges of kidnapping for ransom under Section 356 of the Indian Penal Code.
The duo has been remanded to police custody till May 17.
