Crime Branch officials have arrested two men who have over 50 cases of chain-snatching registered against them at various police stations in the western suburbs.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria said Mira Road residents Sagar Thakur (18) and Shoaib Bhadruddin Dharam (19) were arrested on September 2 from outside Raghuleela Mall in Kandivli.
Maria said Thakur and Dharam led a lavish lifestyle and used to splurge on hookah bars and snooker parlours.
“They looked like college students that’s why nobody suspected them. They would snatch chains when they ran out of money and then splurge on their girlfriends and snooker parlours,” he added.
Gold chains and mangalsutras totalling worth Rs 12.66 lakh and two motorcycles — TVS Apachi and Baja Pulsar — have been recovered from them.
“The duo had been operating since January and was involved in 50 cases of chainsnatching in Dahisar, Borivli, Kandivli, Malad and Santacruz,” Maria said. “The bikes belonged to their friends and they used to borrow the vehicles when they were on their ‘job’.”
Mira Road jewellers Manoj Jain (34) and Bhupendra Kothari (28) who bought the stolen property from the duo have also been arrested.
