For the second time in as many days, a police constable was knocked down while on duty during a nakabandi in the western suburbs. Suresh Kalkundre, 55, suffered minor injuries to his leg after being hit by a barricade that was sent flying by a car that broke through the nakabandi.
On Tuesday, a woman police sub-inspector was hit by a motorbike while she was on nakabandi duty near the Western Express Highway.
Thursday's incident took place near Udaychan Kendra located on the New Link Road in Charkop, Kandivali. Sometime after 3.30am, a Honda City came speeding towards the barricades positioned at the check-post. Kalkundre was standing next to one of the barricades. Police claim the driver of the car was speeding and hit one of the barricades, while passing through. The barricade flew into Kalkundre injuring the constable. The driver managed to escape.
"We have registered a case of causing injuries due to rash and negligent driving against an unknown motorist," said Vasant Devarkar, senior police inspector of Charkop police station. "Some of the policemen on nakabandi duty along with Kalkundre have managed to partially note down the car's registration number. We have passed on this information to the RTO and are checking for Honda City cars with similar registration numbers," Devarkar said.
