Two minors, aged four and seven, drowned in a pond at Nerul’s sector 18 on Monday.
The bodies of the children were not identified and no one has forward to claim them.
The Civil Defence Team reached the spot along with the Fire Brigade to rescue the boys.
Harjinderkaur Tandel, a lady officer from the Civil Defence, said: “We pulled out one of the boys who was already dead. We also rescued the other boy and took him to the NMMC hospital at Vashi where he was declared dead at the time of admission.”
“The boys were swimming in the pond and there were women washing clothes there. They slipped and fell from the stairs and drowned as they did not know to swim,” added Tandel.
“As of now, no one has claimed the body. The two kids may have been children of construction workers from Bengal,” said a police constable.
Satish Ramane, Corporator of Nerul ward no 77 said: “We will now ask the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation to provide safety measures at the ponds so that such untoward incidents do not take place. We will agitate if our demands are not met.”
