Is the underworld rearing its ugly head in the city again?
On Saturday evening, five unidentified men opened fire at four men in the Bhendi Bazar area of south Mumbai. While two men died, the other two men and a ragpicker suffered injuries.
The police are yet to identify the shooters or the motive behind the incident. But sources said the attackers were targeting one of the men, Asif Dadhi, because of a fallout in a building redevelopment project near JJ flyover. Dadhi, who was injured, is critical.
Irfan Qureshi alias Irfan Mota and Shakeel Modag, a close aide of MLC Bhai Jagtap, took at least three bullets each. While Qureshi died on the spot, Modag succumbed during treatment at JJ Hospital. “I am at the hospital. I cannot say anything right now,” said Jagtap.
The ragpicker was identified as Gangu, but the fourth man is yet to be identified.
According to eyewitness, the four men were standing outside Shalimar Cool Point, a roadside eatery, when the gunmen opened fire.
Preliminary reports said the assailants had parked three motorcycles about 100 meters away and walked up to eatery.
“After the shooting spree, they coolly walked back to their motorcycles and drove away,” said an eyewitness, refusing to give his name.
“Dadhi is the key link in our investigation. He may have identified at least one of the shooters. We are waiting for him to regain consciousness,” said an investigating officer.
In a similar incident in the same area on July 31, 2009, Zahid Hassan Mir alias Chhote Miyan (50), an alleged associate of don Dawood Ibrahim, and another man were shot dead by two unidentified men. Till date, no arrests have been made. It is suspected that Mir, who allegedly handled Dawood’s matka business in the city, was killed over a monetary dispute.
He was also reportedly involved in the killing of police informer Irfan Chindi in 2009.
