A labourer was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl while his accomplice, also a labourer, was arrested for abetting the crime. Both the accused were also charged for assaulting the victim’s brother-in-law. Two accomplices, who are yet to be identified, are absconding.
The accused have been identified as Nanasaheb Madane, 21, and Raul Karimshaikh, 22. “During interrogation, Madane confessed to raping the girl while Karimshaikh kept a watch. We are trying to trace their two accomplices,” said Vilas Bhole, police inspector, Cuffe Parade police station.
The teenager hails from Uttar Pradesh and had come to Mumbai a month back to visit her sister and brother-in-law. On the day of the alleged incident, the victim’s sister was out with friends while her brother-in-law, a taxi driver, was out on work.
Police said that Madane allegedly raped the teenager on April 25. “The victim was playing with her four-year-old nephew when Madane barged into her flat. He dragged the victim to the next-door flat. He tied up her hands and repeatedly raped her while Karimshaikh and two others looked on. He threatened to kill the victim if she told anyone about the incident,” said Bhole.
Sources said that the girl told her sister and brother-in-law about the incident three days later. “She recognised one of Madane’s accomplices. When her brother-in-law confronted the accused, he called the other three accused. They beat up the victim’s brother-in-law with iron rods and pipes,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity.
