Two Western Railway employees —a trackman and a supervisor — were crushed by the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Duranto Express late on Friday night, when they were doing repair work between Vasai and Naigaon stations.
A team of 12 people were at work, when they saw a train coming on the track they were working on. They panicked and began running, when they spotted the Duranto coming on the adjoining track simultaneously, the Vasai Government Railway Police (GRP) said.
GRP officials said that the incident took place at around 12.10am. Babasaheb Ugale, 30, a trackman from Zariwala Chawl in Tardeo and Hariom Dudi, 43, a supervisor from Naigaon railway quarters died on the spot.
“Soon after the incident, the Vasai station master informed the GRP, who walked towards the spot and found the duo crushed between poles 50/6B and 50/8B. Nobody else sustained any injuries,” said Praful Kshirsagar, senior inspector of Vasai GRP.
The GRP has handed over the bodies to their families after a postmortem. Their heads were crushed in the accident. While Ugale’s family conducted his last rites in Nashik, his hometown, Dudi’s kin took the body to their native place in Rajasthan.
Police have registered a report of accidental death, but said that the matter would be investigated further.
Meanwhile, Western Railway Mazdoor Sangh (WRMS) leader Ajay Singh, who went to the spot and hospital this morning, said that the railways didn’t even arrange an ambulance to send their bodies to their homes, though they died on-duty.
