In a freak accident in Vasai, two sisters aged five and four died after they slipped into a two-ft deep pit filled with rainwater.
The incident took place at around 8 am on Monday after Ujala (5) and Nikita Gautam (4) left home to go to play.
The police said that the pit, located close to their shanty at Waliv in Vasai (East) gets
filled with rainwater during monsoon.
“For a grown-up the water is just knee-deep but it can be dangerous for children,” said Police Sub-Inspector Narendra Konde.
The girls’ father, Manoj Gautam, is a labourer and their mother is a housewife.
The police said Manoj left for work a little before 8 am. Shortly after that, the sisters stepped out of the house and went a few yards away to play.
They were playing behind the quarry, close to the pit.
“The two slipped into the pit while playing. Some of the locals who saw the two girls fall rushed to save them while others informed their parents,” Konde said.
The girls were removed from the pit and rushed to a nearby clinic where they were declared dead on arrival.
“The bodies of the two girls were brought to the Primary Health Centre in Navghar around noon. A post-mortem was conducted and it has been ascertained that the girls died due to drowning,” said Medical Officer Anil Yadav from to Primary Health Centre.
The Manikpur police have registered a case of accidental death.
A devastated Manoj is blaming himself for the mishap.
“Had we kept an eye on our daughters, this would not have happened,” he said.
