A two-year-old child fell to his death from the seventh floor of a guesthouse in Chunabhatti on Sunday morning.

The child, Kiran Paul, was the younger son of a US-based couple. The family had come to the city to celebrate the New Year.

The incident took place around 8.30am.

Kiran was trying to look out of the window when he lost balance and fell. The window did not have a grill, the Chunabhatti police said.

According to the police, the child’s parents, Bryan and Sejal, were busy packing in the other room and had left Kiran and his five-year-old brother to play in the bedroom.

“However, Kiran got tired of playing and went to the window to look outside. We believe, he was leaning out of the open window and fell down,” said Mahesh Jadhav, inspector, Chunabhatti police station.

Jadhav added, “The window in the guesthouse did not have a grill, which could have saved the child’s life. Hence we have registered a case of causing death due to negligence against the management of the guesthouse.”

The police are now trying to find out who was responsible for ensuring that the basic security apparatus was put in place at the guesthouse.

The police said that Kiran’s parents are both lawyers in the US and had come to the city on December 30 especially for New Year celebrations.
