A 20-year-old non-resident Indian (NRI), who came to the city for her cousin’s wedding, went missing from Malwani in Malad on Monday.

Guninder Chehal had been living in Mumbai with her maternal uncle since December 2009. The Malwani police said she had been studying and working part time in Washington in the US.

“Chehal, who is unmarried, had come to Mumbai with her parents, to attend her cousin’s wedding on March 14,” said senior inspector VR Andhale.

The police said, after the wedding, while her parents returned to Washington, she decided to stay back with her uncle Jasbir Singh Bhullar, in Vandana Apar-tments, Malwani in Malad (W).

The police said Chehal went missing on Monday, and that it appeared to be a missing person case and not kidnapping. “Around 12.15 pm, she told her uncle she was going to visit a gurudwara located near Gate No. 1 in Malwani, and did not return,” said Andhale adding that they have registered a missing complaint and are investigating.

“Chehal was not carrying a cellphone, so her relatives could not get in touch with her,” said an officer. “After she went missing, in the last two days, Bhullar has got six blank calls on his cellphone from a private number, which does not display on his phone.”
