A 22–year-old woman, who was reportedly depressed after her father’s death, allegedly jumped to death from the ninth floor of an apartment at Colaba on Tuesday evening.
Sonia Mirchandani (22) lived with her mother Rani (45) and her younger brother, Hitesh (17) on the sixth floor of Gitanjali Apartments near Radio Club.
Sonia had completed her graduation and was unemployed.
Rani works as a travel agent while Hitesh is a student.
“Sonia was very close to her father who passed away three months ago. She was depressed since then and was undergoing treatment at Bhatia hospital in Tardeo,” said Sub-Inspector Sachin More.
The incident occurred around 7.45 pm on Tuesday, said the police.
“Hitesh was at home while Rani had gone out for some work. Sonia jumped from the gallery in the corridor on the ninth floor,” said More.
A resident of the building saw the girl jump.
“She saw Sonia jump from the ninth floor and immediately alerted other residents,” said a police officer.
“According to the eyewitness, the woman first went to the terrace but as there was wire fencing, she came down to the ninth floor and jumped,” said a police officer from the Colaba police station.
Sonia was rushed to the hospital but died before admission.
“We are trying to find if she jumped to death or fell off accidentally,” he added.
According to police, the family does not suspect any foul play.
The Colaba police have registered an accidental death report and are investigating the incident.
