A 23-year-old from an affluent family was arrested for allegedly blackmailing a girl into giving him money. The police said the accused told the girl he possessed some objectionable photographs of her.
The accused, Manav Singh (name changed to protect identity), is a resident of IC Colony and plays cricket for a well-known airline. The victim resides in Thane and is employed with a recruitment agency located at Borivli (West).
The 22-year-old complainant, in her statement, told the police that she had been a close friend of the accused, who had been blackmailing her into giving him money for the past year. The victim claimed that she had given him Rs1 lakh last year.
On August 26, Singh drove to the victim’s office and called her. When she came down, he asked her to give him Rs 50,000. The girl’s father, who was aware of the blackmailing, saw his daughter sitting in the car with Singh and alerted the passing beat marshal.
“We have checked Singh’s mobile phone and laptop, which were found in the car. We have found pornographic clippings. None of them, however, are of the victim. We suspect he did not have any obscene photographs of the victim,” assistant police inspector Mukund Patil said.
“We also learned that Singh was in partnership with the victim and her boss to provide construction workers in Mauritius. However, during their last dealing, the company failed to provide the promised 330 workers and had to suffer a loss of $23,000. The victim’s boss then decided to remove Singh from the partnership and include the victim’s father.”
Singh was booked and arrested for extortion, possession of obscene content and outraging the modesty of a woman. He was released on a bail bond of Rs20,000 on Friday.
