A 23-year-old call centre employee drowned off Manori jetty on Sunday afternoon even as his friend watched helplessly.

The victim, Anand Kamat, and his colleague and friend Francis Silven (23), had gone to Gorai beach in Borivli (West) on Saturday to spend the night.

Police said the men hired a room at a guesthouse and drank all night. Silven told the police that on Sunday at 1.00 pm the duo left the guesthouse to return home. They lived at Sahar Gaon in Andheri (East) and worked at a call centre in Powai.

“We had gone on my motorcyle and were planning to return by crossing the creek with the motorcycle on the streamer,” Francis said. “Kamat was so drunk that he could not sit on the motorcycle. So I hailed an autorickshaw and asked the driver to drop him at Manori jetty.”

Francis followed the autorickshaw on the motorcycle. When they reached the jetty, the boat going to Marve in Malad had left so they decided to wait.

“Kamat told me he would sit on the bank of the jetty so he could become sober. But instead of sitting on the bank, he jumped into the water,” Francis said.

Francis, who does not know how to swim, started shouting for help.

“I jumped in but could not save him. Some locals informed the police,” Francis said. “Instead of helping, the locals said Kamat should not have jumped and was paying the price for his foolish act.”

The police and Fire Brigade took five hours to recover Kamat’s body and sent it to Bhagwati Hospital for a post-mortem. “We are recording the statements of Francis and other eyewitnesses to find out whether Kamat was under the influence of alcohol or jumped in the water deliberately,” said a police officer. “We have informed Kamat's parents.”
