The Trombay police on Saturday arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly throwing acid on his wife’s face on Friday. The couple got married two months ago.
Mehboob Badshah, an employee with a Pest control firm, was arrested along with his father Sardar Badshah (45) for the crime.
The police said Mehboob and his wife Shakila Bano (18) got married about two months ago. Bano’s relatives alleged neither Mehboob nor his relatives revealed his handicap (one leg shorter than the other) at the time of marriage. This revelation soon after the marriage led to constant quarrels between the couple.
Mohammed Umar, a family friend of Bano, alleged Mehboob assaulted her on several occasions.
Due to the physical abuse, Bano left her husband’s place in Baiganwadi in Govandi and went to her parents at Chembur on at least three occasions. “However, on each occasion she returned to her husband’s place after being persuaded by her parents,” Umar said.
Umar said Bano returned to her parent’s place about 15 days ago.
On Friday Mehboob and his father came there with divorce papers, which she agreed to sign, he said.
The victim’s relatives in their statement alleged that after taking Bano’s signature on the divorce papers, Sardar held her from behind while Mehboob threw acid on her face. Mehboob carried the acid bottle in his pocket.
The police said the victim’s parents tried to intervene, but the damage had been done and the accused managed to flee. Bano was rushed to Shatabdi hospital and was later transferred to Sion hospital, where she is presently recuperating.
A case of causing grievous injuries was registered against the son-father duo at Trombay police station. The duo was later arrested on Saturday from their home, the police said.
“Further investigation is on in the case,” said Police Sub Inspector A. Chejwankar of Trombay police station.
