24-year-old held for strangling friend

Irate over the suspicion that his mother was having an affair with his friend, a 24-year-old allegedly stranguled his friend and dumped the body in an autorickshaw in Bandra on July 21. The police arrested the accused on Thursday.

Police identified the deceased as Andheri resident Mohammed Shanu Khan, who was employed as a driver. His brother Mateen identified the body. The police suspected the involvement of Shanu’s friend Mohammed Latif Khan (24), a bread-vendor.

“Latif had gone to his hometown in Uttar Pradesh. When we called him, he confessed to having killed Shanu. He said he would be return to the city soon,” said Assistant Police Inspector, Anil Badgujar, of the Bandra police station.

When he did not return for 10 days, the police made inquiries and found that he was hiding in Dharavi and arrested him.

Latid reporetedly told the police that on July 20, he and Shanu went for dinner and drinks. Shanu told Latif to change his job and said till he gets one he would take care of his family. “When Latif told him that he would not be able to repay the loan, Shanu said that his mother would do that ‘in kind’,” said Badgujar.

Latif got angry. While returning home, he strangled Shanu and dumped his body in the autorickshaw, police said.

He has been remanded in police custody until August 5.
