The Kalwa police took just 12 hours to crack the case of a woman who was found strangled with her own mangalsutra in Kalwa on Friday. They have arrested the woman’s brother-in-law, Kamlesh Lohar, 24, who was trying to flee to his native place Rajasthan after the committing the crime.
Inspector Prakash Nilewad, Kalwa police station, Thane, said Gayatri Lohar, 20, her husband Sampat, 22, his elder brother Kamlesh and a relative Madan Lohar, 26, lived together in the fourth floor flat of a building in Vitawa, Kalwa. The men were carpenters and used to take small contracts.
On the day of murder, Sampat and Madan had gone to Panvel for a job, and Kamlesh stayed back. In the afternoon, Kamlesh told Gayatri he loved her and tried to forcibly hug and kiss her. A furious Gayatri threatened to tell her husband and other relatives about it.
This scared Kamlesh, who first tried to rape Gayatri and when she fought back with all her strength, he put a cushion over her face and strangulated her with her mangalsutra.
The incident came to light when Sampat and Madan returned in the evening and found Gayatri dead.
Inspector Nilewad said they trapped Kamlesh by calling him on his mobile phone posing as a customer who wanted some furniture made. At first Kamlesh refused to come to the ‘customer’s’ house. But, the police were simultaneously trying to trace his location as well as keep him busy on the phone.
Finally, the police told him to come and collect some advance for the work and complete the contract when he returned from his native place. Kamlesh promptly arrived to collect the money and the police arrested him.
