A 24-year-old woman was found dead at her residence in Antop Hill on Saturday night. According to the Wadala TT police investigating the case, Renuka Karote was found hanging from the fan at her flat in Antop Hill’s New Mhada Colony.
Karote’s father Khushalrao Bhavre, a labourer from Aurangabad, has registered a police complaint alleging that his daughter was physically and mentally tortured by her in-laws over dowry.
The police was informed about the case by doctors of Sion Hospital. Karote’s in-laws, including her husband Rajesh, mother-in-law Narmada, two sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law claim the deceased was alone in a room latched from the inside on Saturday evening, and hence allege that it is a case of suicide. “They claim they saw her hanging from the fan by her sari only after they broke the door down,” said police inspector Modak who is investigating the case.
According to Bhavre, the hanging was abetted by Karote’s in-laws who had demanded Rs 5 lakh to buy another Mhada flat, and had tortured her and threatened her with death for not being able to procure the money.
“Right now we have simply recorded the complaint. The in-laws are being questioned. Further investigations will be possible only after the post mortem report,” said Modak.
