A 25-year-old commando of Maharashtra’s Force 1, an elite counter-terrorism unit formed after the 26/11 attacks, fatally shot himself in the chest at the police training centre in Kalina on Friday. No suicide note was found, police said.
At 5am, Nandlal Limba Sonawane went to the terrace of the residential quarters and shot himself with his service pistol, police said. “On hearing the gunshot, his colleagues rushed there and found him in a pool of blood,” said Rajendra Pardesi, senior inspector, Vakola police. He was declared dead soon after he was admitted to hospital.
Sonawane, a Dhule native, joined the state police as a constable, and was selected for the Force 1 two years ago. His colleagues told the police he had been depressed for a few days. The police are probing this further.
