A 25-year-old man was shot dead by his uncle at Diva on Tuesday following a public quarrel over a shop.

The police have arrested Brahma Mhatre and charged him with the murder of Samit Mhatre, as well as for attempt to murder as he had also shot at Amit, Samit’s twin.

The firing took place in the day near the Diva railway station crossing. Brahma, too, suffered injuries to his head and has been admitted to Thane Civil Hospital. “On Tuesday around 11.45am, Brahma was on his way to Dombivli from Diva station. His nephews, along with one of their accomplices, Satish Bhoir, allegedly attacked him near the ticket window. During the fight, Brahma fired his licensed revolver in the air. But, the three continued to hit Brahma. In the chaos, one of the bullets hit Samit on the chest, while another hit Amit on his hand,” said an officer from Thane railway police, requesting anonymity.

Samit died on the spot while Amit has been admitted to Deepak Hospital in Diva.

Brahma is a developer and also owns a transport business. He has five shops in Diva and had rented one of these to his nephews and another to a grocer. Amit and Samit started a country liquor outlet. Customers who came to the grocer’s shop also complained of being harassed by alcoholics. Brahma wanted them to return the shop to him, the police said.
