A 27-year-old man allegedly threw acid on his paternal uncle’s face and attacked him with an axe owing to a property dispute in Andheri on Saturday.

The incident took place around 8pm on the first floor of Uttam da Dhaba hotel, which is located at Marol Maroshi road in Andheri (East).

Sarabjeet Singh alias Happy, 27, came to meet Rajinder Singh Lakshotra, 49, his uncle and the proprietor of the establishment, in connection with a long-standing dispute over the hotel. The dispute turned ugly and Singh allegedly splashed acid on Lakshotra’s face and attacked him with an axe.

Lakshotra was rushed to the Seven Hills Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Doctors say he is stable and there is no neurological damage.

“He has corneal injury in both the eyes as a result of the acid, but we still don’t know the extent of vision damage,” they added.

The MIDC police arrested the accused for attempted murder at around 2.30am on Sunday. Singh, who is unemployed, was produced before a local court that remanded him in police custody till March 2.

An officer said the acid used by Singh was used to clean washrooms. The police have not recovered the axe.

Senior inspector S Hujband said there had been long-standing disagreement between the families of the accused and the victim over sharing the rent collected from the hotel and two shops near the hotel, all of which were jointly owned by both families.

The uncle and nephew have also had altercations in the past.
