Less than three weeks after a woman drowned her one-month-old twins in New Panvel, another mother allegedly burnt her two kids to death before committing suicide in Karanjale village at Panvel.
At 10am, neighbours noticed smoke emanating from 27-year-old Mamta Chauhan’s house and immediately informed her husband Ashok and the police.
After cops broke open the door, they found an empty kerosene bottle with some kerosene spilt on the floor. Mamta, her two children 3-year-old Shivam and 8-month-old Rani were already dead by then.
None of the neighbours, however, had heard any cries from inside the house. “It is possible that she first strangulated them and then set all three on fire. We will however, have to wait for the post-mortem report for confirmation,” said RV Gadhavle, senior police inspector of Panvel police station.
The victims’ bodies have been sent to Panvel Municipal Hospital for post-mortem.
Mamta’s husband Ashok, who seemed to be in a state of shock, said, “I still can’t understand what happened and why?” Ashok and Mamta married in 2009 at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. “We came from our village here with our kids last year. There were no major problems between us. In fact, we were planning to go to our village on Thursday,” he said.
