Three persons were arrested for allegedly assaulting an on-duty traffic constable on the Western Express Highway in Kandivli (East) on Saturday. The accused beat up the constable when he asked them pull over for a traffic violation.
According to the Samta Nagar police, 49-year-old Nandkumar Shivaji Bankar is attached to the Kandivli traffic outpost.
The incident took place at around 9pm on Saturday when Bankar was on duty at Bhor junction on the highway. The main accused, Ravi Hirve took a wrong turn at the junction and was not wearing a seat belt. Bankar noticed the violations and asked Hirve to stop his vehicle. Hirve, however, drove straight at Bankar, causing him to jump aside in alarm. Hirve then parked the car to the side and started hurling obscenities at him.
“Three others, who were in the car with Hirve got out and threw me on the ground, then beat me up. They punched and kicked me many times, only because I had asked them to pay the fine or the driver would have his license impounded,” said Bankar.
The police said the accused fled the spot after assaulting Bankar, who was admitted to Bhagwati hospital where he is receiving treatment for injuries on his chest, stomach, left eye, left ear, mouth and private parts. He is in a stable condition.
“Hirve was arrested when he went to Bhagwati hospital on Saturday night to pick up some medicines. We arrested two other accused – Vijay Kewat, 26, a housekeeping employee at a mall and Pradeep Bhalekar, 26, who works with a private firm – following tip-off from Hirve. The fourth accused is absconding and should be arrested soon,” said Santosh Borate, sub inspector, Samta Nagar police station.
The police said that the accused have been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 307 for attempt to murder and 353 for assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty. The trio was remanded in police custody till October 11 after being produced before a holiday court on Sunday.
